299 queen street west - the muchmusic experience tour

TUESDAY 17TH;
wasn't sure i'd be able to go out at all after most likely straining a muscle in my foot the day before (actually woke up mid-sleep while afterwards) but somehow found a way to walk on it!
documentary screening followed by Q&A with muchmusic + musiqueplus VJs @ théÒtre rialto. <-- sooo glorious, how i'd missed thee!

jardin botanique

FRIDAY 13TH;
now past the weather mishap of the prior weekend, eryn & i were (at last) off to see the lanterns over at the garden. good, cuz no, i wasn't about to pay for any more goddamn unrefundable tickets!
eryn initially got stranded a bit waiting to pass at the border so we had to skip our subway dinner, so i brought some corn chips instead as she came to pick me up and we left right away.
honestly, having it been only me i wouldn't have bothered with the lanterns this year since i figured it'd be way too similar to last year, and boy oh boy was i ever right!! no real effort whatsoever. pffffffffft. i'm still glad we went as she'd never gone before which made it totally worthwhile, however next year? count me out.
came back to my place at a decent time so we were able to finally order dinner = salvatorΓ© pizza. got the mexican pizza for myself which turned out to be a bit too spicy for my liking. pretty sure it's the banana peppers' fault!! but hers was ok. live and learn, as they say.

nick cave solo tour

THURSDAY 12TH;
"what doesn't kill you just makes you...crazier"
after rushing to get my claims done for the job & upon the start of a 6 days vacation, that was it. THE TIME HAD FINALLY COME TO GO SEE NICK CAVE LIVE AGAIN AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS... 4TH ROW!!!
now here we aaaaare...
lookie lookie.
turns out my gamble of randomly picking the stage's left side paid off:
cuz whenever there's a piano up on the stage = such a wild card!! i mean..... i could've easily spent the evening mostly looking at the back of a piano, right?? when am i EVER that lucky? wowzer. with an empty seat to my left + a super calm lady to my right. AMEN.
the show was a slow start for me. none of my favorite songs were being played and the overall mood hadn't quite been set yet. but the night was young and it certainly picked up with songs such as "jubilee street", "into my arms" and "the mercy seat" (!!!)
upon my first listen of the "carnage" album i pretty much immediately fell in love with it, so i was crossing my fingers for anything off of it and got my wish with "balcony man". as a song intro, if i remember correctly nick was speaking about it being about whatever this and that... & then;
- [loud guy in the crowd]: "YEAAAAH!!!!"
- [nick looking up towards the guy's way]: "YEAH! EXACTLY."
i wish i could've caught it on video cuz it was hilarious, but at first i was a bit apprehensive cuz of the "no photos no videos" pre-recorded message. albeit given that the lighting + my android phone weren't the best of friends at that particular event (aka, nick mostly looking like a ghost) perhaps this is not so much of a loss. but anyhow. then i guess as some kind of shtick, nick wanted all of the people sitting at balcony level to go crazy whenever he'd say "balcony" throughout the song, and for the people at ground level to keep quiet (boo hoo hooo).
- [nick]: "ok. so... this one's for the YEAH man."
hahahhahhahahaha. sounds about right. actually captured part of the song cuz at this point i thought omg just f*ck it:
i just adore how he does more than singing and actually chats + interacts with crowds like that. truthfully, i'd been missing that a lot with the most recent concerts i've attended. he's just a terrific communicator and i'm quite fascinated with this man's mind. could easily listen to him for hours on end. for however some of his lyrics can get dark/disturbing, others are so darn beautiful and poetic which has me space out into another world.
i also loved how he kept introducing songs saying; "oh... that's a good one!"
HA HA.
but the sheer surprise of the night came when he started talking about marc bolan. ♡♡♡♡♡♡ soon followed by his own cover of "cosmic dancer". true highlight of my evening. really had no clue marc had been an influence at all for his own work.
at the very end i felt compelled to rush up to the stage in an attempt to shake nick's hand (as people usually will), but godfreakingdammit the only guy to my left blocking the way towards my goal would not budge! and i didn't especially want to tell him to freakin' move, aaaand so be it. meh.
had a fantastic evening. life, thank you thank you thank you.
p.s.: i decided to pick up some merch after the show but really should've made up my mind BEFORE it started. (worth it but) what a pain...!
