| show starts off with "lady marmelade" which is my least favorite song from the movie...in fact probably the only one i dislike. there's now a guy in drag up on stage performing the song along with the other girls—dare i say most likely there as a t0ken for inclusion? because this had the hell to do with the movie whose only gay elements must've been elton john + queen songs. btw for the record: i have seen and thoroughly enjoyed tons of drag queen shows throughout this existence on earth, so let me just brush that off as the issue i've got. but nevermind, it'll get better.... |
| as the show continues, to my dismay i realize that they're also adding songs which weren't in the original movie (IMO lame newer songs). alright so i see they've taken some liberties which i'm not too fond of. but nevermind, it'll get better.... |
| now enters the scene when satine—main character of the story/movie—first appears as she drops down from the ceiling on the trapeze thing and does her "diamonds are a girl's best friend" number: |
| alright, let's cut the crap. when i'm thinking of satine, i'm thinking of nicole kidman. when i'm thinking of nicole kidman in "moulin rouge!", i'm thinking: tall, long red hair, very slender, ultra pale skin. see visual above if necessary. i suppose sort of the polar opposite of that would be: short/average height, most likely wearing a wig, thighs rather on the larger side, dark complexion. |
| well. if there's ever a w0ke version of "moulin rouge!", that's exactly what i was attending at the matinee showing from the al hirschfeld theatre! |
| if that was not clear enough, it's the latter race-swapped version of satine who ended up dropping down from the ceiling as my jaw nearly dropped along to the f*cking floor. but oooo, it's probably rac!st of me that all of my instincts were urging me to exit the theatre right there and then from utter shock and disappointment (cuz everything's f*cking rac!st these days, right). but REALLY. swear to god i found it as shocking as if it were a white actress playing the marvellous whoopi goldberg in "sister act". |
| btw just so you know, the character of toulouse-lautrec is now also black. |
| maybe i'm naive or something, but whenever i'm going to see a play/show, i'm expecting to see the actors featured into the poster and adverts. *taps down here* not sure about anyone else?? |
| ...maybe just maybe that's the start of figuring out whether or not you want to pay to see the damned thing? in a "i'm buying what you're selling" way??? i had NO CLUE WHATSOEVER that broadway sometimes used alternate actors even for main roles like that. wowwww. |
| the other day i was coincidentally watching a youtuber's video commenting on disney's w0ke version of the "little mermaid" which just came out. here i say coincidentally since we're talking about another redhead swap! f*cking hell. but anyway he perfectly summed up what grinds my gears as peter griffin would say; "people want to feel nostalgia. they want to feel that longing for a time that has since passed. when you make something like this, people don't feel it. and it's not because they're rac!st, it's because it's not the character. it's not the character they remember. it's a different person." © timcast @ youtube (thanks!!) |
| let me just go off on a tangent for a bit and then go back to the musical... |
| look. i'm all about inclusion. word of the hour, isn't it?? i myself am a weirdo who doesn't fit into the classic checkboxes of human living & behaviour. i don't want my differences celebrated or be brought to the forefront cuz it's just f*cking stupid and honestly who cares. might've had a different opinion and actions in the past, but at this point i'm utterly fed up with this crap and find it extremely pointless. i hate hate HATE having this ideology constantly being shoved into our faces like a skipping record. and you just can't escape it any longer because it's truly eeeverywherrre. feels like i'm back in freakin' kindergarden being told; "be nice to your little classmates now okkk??". but guess it's the new world we're trapped into now. a world with people being used as pawns. i sorrowfully miss the days when we didn't have to reiterate or talk or make a spectacle out of our race/color, gender/pronouns *siiiigh* and quirkiness. if you think you're changing the world with this nonesense, yeah damn right you're changing it: you're changing it for the worse. |
| back to so-called review now. |
| no chemistry between the two main actors which wouldn't be so bad were it not a freakin' love story...? christian holding a gun towards the end instead of the duke = WTF. christian doesn't seem to feel sad as satine is dying and so i'm thinking he and i must be telepathically speaking. best actors in my opinion? the girl playing nini and also the guy playing harold. otherwise usually i'm rooting for the main characters of course, but here, n-o-p-e. not a chance, sorry.

| diving into the topic of the songs... no "spectacular spectacular". no "THE SHOW MUST GO ON", imagine that. swapping "one day i'll fly away" with katy perry's "firework" 🤮 downright sacrilegious. "el tango de roxanne" was rather bland vs the outstanding original which still gives me chills to this day. however, one positive thing: the addition of sia's "chandelier" for the green fairy scene. this i actually found to be really good.

| at last the musical ended (psssst quick let's get outta here):
